At the May 26th Arts for All Progress Report meeting, Burbank Arts Ed Advocacy Team Co-Chair Alexandra Helfrich gave an impressive presentation detailing the great work of the Burbank team this year.  Her speech is below.

"I’d like to share what we learned this year during our partnership with Arts For All.

SMMUSD Budget Update

Early this week, arts education advocates along with many other parents, educators, and community members in Santa Monica and Malibu were disappointed to learn that Measure A failed according to the latest vote count.* Measure A, a parcel tax initiative conducted by SMMUSD through a mail-in only election, was the district’s best shot at retaining many of its programs and staff.

Every child in Los Angeles County should have access to standards-based, quality, sequential arts education – an arts curriculum that is taught by a qualified teacher, is ongoing and meaningful, and tied to learning in other critical subjects, such as science, math, and English.  Realizing this goal is a central piece of Arts for LA's Platform.

To address concerns about the district budgeting process, LAUSD has adopted a Transparent Budgeting Initiative and created a "Transparent Budgeting Advisory Group" comprised of community members, school leadership, parents and union representatives to "provide feedback on policy and operational issues related to creating a transparent and effective budgeting process for schools."

Learn the Facts: Why Kids Need Arts Ed

Due to the budget crisis, the Los Angeles Unified School District plans to eliminate 50% of its Elementary Arts Teachers (dance, music-general/vocal and instrumental, theatre and visual arts) - a staggering 173 of the 345 arts teachers for the coming school year - with plans to eliminate the remaining 50% in 2011-2012.

In 1999 the Los Angeles Unified School District took a historic leadership role in restoring standards based arts education by adopting a ten year plan and hiring key implementation staff. Well before the historic Arts and Music Block Grant, LAUSD invested millions of dollars to reinstate arts education for all students. This investment focused on three critical areas: Classroom Instruction, Teacher Development, and Community Partnerships.
